McGill university student plan provides healthcare to rural areas with Windows Phone and Win 8

McGill university student plan provides healthcare to rural areas with Windows Phone and Win 8

Those of us living in metropolitan areas don't think twice about our ease of access to medical care, but those in rural areas don't enjoy such easy access to a doctor. Abhijeed Kalyan and Shravan Narayan from McGill University in Canada are aware of this problem, and came up with a way for doctors to diagnose and treat patients from afar. Called Project Neem, it's got a hub and spoke organizational structure that puts a healthcare worker in every village and leverages the power of Windows Phone to connect them with medical staff in distant cities.

Participating healthcare workers are given basic medical training and a handheld loaded up with a custom app that identifies patients by scanning their national ID card and stores their pertinent medical info -- from temperature and blood pressure readings to a variety of symptoms. The app has a virtual human body on board that lets users tap parts of the anatomy to bring up a series of symptoms that can be selected to provide treating physicians with the info they need. That information is stored in the cloud and accessed by doctors through a Windows 8 app, who then can relay appropriate treatments to the local healthcare worker. Now all we need is someone to make a real-world tricorder, and we'll truly be able to bring medical care to the masses, wherever they may be.

Your Questions About Shoulder Bursitis Exercises | Health And Fitness

Dave answers:

Frozen shoulders are a common finding in people with diabetes. Additionally, people with diabetes are often less likely to completely recover as well from the condition as non-diabetics.

It may be logical to consider the possibility that low magnesium intake may be a root causative factor in both conditions. I personally have had a frozen shoulder, diabetes runs in my family and I have had past issues with insulin resistance, an often pre-diabetic condition. I think that low magnesium levels may have been why my shoulder froze up and I developed insulin resistance, and that diet changes were helpful in reversing both conditions.

Based on the results of two major studies, the American Diabetes Association currently advocates diets high in magnesium to lower diabetes risk. The major studies they based this recommendation on are:

Magnesium Intake and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in Men and Women ? the results of this study indicated a significant inverse association between diabetes and magnesium intake, i.e. The more magnesium rich foods people ate, the less likely they were to develop diabetes. As a result, the study authors recommend that to avoid diabetes people consume more foods high in magnesium such as nuts, whole grains, and leafy green vegetable. (I?m personally not a fan of whole grains, but I think consuming more nuts and green veggies are a good idea for most people. Most types of beans are also usually a good source of magnesium, too.)

Dietary Magnesium Intake in Relation to Plasma Insulin Levels and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in Women ? researchers from this study found that high intakes of magnesium reduced a person?s chances of developing diabetes. This was especially true for overweight women.
Research shows that magnesium protects against diabetes and it is also the main nutrient needed to relax muscles. When shoulders are frozen in place, it is often because the muscles have become tight and knotted. Perhaps not coincidentally, people with diabetes not only get frozen shoulders, but they also are more likely to have fibromyalgia, another condition often linked to low levels of magnesium.

In frozen shoulder, inflammation in the joint makes the normally loose parts of the joint capsule stick together. This seriously limits the shoulder?s ability to move, and causes the shoulder to freeze. What is happening is the inflammation builds up and everything squeezes tight. When this happens the fluid that lubricates the joint is pushed away and there is no lubrication between the surfaces of the joint. Then when you make it move after it tightens up there is a sudden irritation of every nerve ending in the shoulder joint. The natural lubricants in the joint get spread around again so when the pain eases it becomes easier to move your shoulder.

Fujitsu unveils two new LifeBooks, shows some Ivy Bridge zen

fujitsu-ivy-bridge-Lifebooks-LH532-LH772

Fujitsu's teased us before with Intel's hot new chipset, but now it's getting ready to actually ship two notebooks with Intel's third-gen Core i7 CPU. The first, like others before it, will be a refresh of an older model, the LifeBook LH532, with its last-gen i7 tech swapped out for Ivy Bridge. Other specs will stay the same, with 2GB of system memory, NVIDIA GeForce GT620M graphics with 2GB of VRAM and a 15.6 14-inch 1366x768 high definition TFT LED wide screen. The LifeBook LH772, on the other hand, is an all-new model which will have the same Ivy Bridge i7 horsepower and screen, but the addition of a 2GB NVIDIA Optimus graphics and 4GB of RAM. Being more upmarket than its cousin, it'll have added touches like Onkyo Box Speakers, a DTS UltraPC II Plus sound system and a fingerprint sensor.

Both LifeBooks will have Fujitsu's Face Sense utility, which uses a front facing camera to detect your presence, and pause the system if you're not there. Fujitsu is also touting its Takumi design philosophy, supposedly offering zen-like simplicity and attention to detail -- with features like multiple color choices, rounded keyboard outlines, leveled palm rests and dichromatic keys. Fujitsu hasn't announced pricing yet, but if you need to hit your tasks quickly but harmoniously, check the PR below for more details.

Update: The Lifebook LH532 is a 14" model, not 15.6". Apologies for any confusion.
