Egypt jihadi groups say behind deadly Israeli border attack

ISMAILIA, Egypt (Reuters) - An Islamist militant group based in Egypt's Sinai has claimed responsibility for a cross-border attack that killed an Israeli soldier in the restive peninsula where jihadi groups have gained a foothold.

Three gunmen were also killed in Friday's attack, which the group Ansar Bayt al-Maqdes said was in response to an anti-Islam film that has sparked worldwide protests and violence. A second Israeli soldier was wounded in the attack.

There have been at least four such cross-border raids in just over a year in the area where security lapsed after the uprising that overthrew Hosni Mubarak last year.

Egypt's army and police launched a security sweep after a raid that killed 16 Egyptian border guards in August.

In a statement on an Internet site often used by jihadi groups, Ansar Bayt al-Maqdes said it had named the operation as an "attack to discipline those insulting the beloved Prophet", a reference to the film that mocked Prophet Mohammad.

The group accused Jews of involvement in the film, but did not explain how. Though the film was made in the United States, Israel is often viewed by militants as a proxy agent for U.S. policy in the region because it is a close ally of Washington.

CNN reported that Jewish groups denied some reported allegations that there was any Jewish backing for the film.

The U.S. government has condemned the film and said it had no role in it, but said it could not act against the production because of its commitment to freedom of expression.

Many Muslims view any portrayal of the Prophet as blasphemous.

Ansar Bayt al-Maqdes, which means "supporters of the holy place", a reference to Jerusalem, pledged to carry out another operation, at an unspecified time, in revenge for what it said was the killing of a member in Sinai with the help of Israel.

It was not immediately clear what help it believed Israel had given in the death of Ibrahim Oweidah. Egyptian authorities had said his death in September was due to a landmine accident.

The group has previously claimed an attack on a pipeline delivering gas to Israel and rocket attacks targeting Israel.

Swedish doctors claim pioneering uterus transplant

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Two Swedish women are hoping to get pregnant after undergoing what doctors are calling the world's first mother-to-daughter uterus transplants.

Specialists at the University of Goteborg said they performed the surgery over the weekend without complications but added that they won't consider it successful unless the women give birth to healthy children.

"That's the best proof," said Michael Olausson, one of the surgeons.

One of the unidentified women had her uterus removed many years ago because of cervical cancer, while the other was born without a womb. Both are in their 30s.

They will undergo a year of observation before doctors attempt to help them get pregnant via in vitro fertilization, in which embryos created with eggs from their own ovaries will be implanted in their wombs.

Researchers around the world have been looking for ways to transplant wombs so that women who have lost a uterus to cancer or other diseases can become pregnant.

Fertility experts hailed the Swedish transplants as a significant step but stressed it remains to be seen whether they will result in successful pregnancies.

Even if the approach works, it is unclear how many women will choose such an option, given the risks and the extreme nature of the operation compared with, say, using a surrogate mother.

Turkish doctors last year said they performed the first successful uterus transplant, giving a womb from a deceased donor to a young woman. Olausson said that woman is doing fine, but he wasn't sure whether she has started fertility treatment.

In 2000, doctors in Saudi Arabia transplanted a uterus from a live donor, but it had to be removed three months later because of a blood clot.

Olausson said there could be a lower risk of organ rejection when the donor is a family member, but he said a more important factor is the "emotional connection" between mother and daughter.

Also, the mother-daughter procedure makes it easier to "know that the transplanted organ works," he said, adding that it doesn't matter whether the donor is past menopause.

For a year, doctors will monitor how the two patients respond to the anti-rejection drugs needed to stop their immune systems from attacking the donated wombs.

After a maximum of two pregnancies, the wombs will be removed so the women can stop taking the drugs, which can have side effects such as high blood pressure, swelling and diabetes and may also raise the risk of some types of cancer.

"There's no doubt this will be a pioneering step if it's been successful," said Scott Nelson, chairman of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. "At present, the only option for these women is to have a surrogacy ? i.e., having their embryos implanted into another woman."

Nelson said a donated womb would not contain all the blood vessels it originally had, possibly compromising a baby's development.

"Pre-term birth is a major risk ? i.e., a small baby being born. That's what you'd mainly be worried about," he said.

James Grifo, an infertility expert at New York University, questioned how a fetus would be affected by the immune-suppressing drugs.

"Some people will always be willing to take the risk, but there are issues that need to be addressed before you expose a fetus to these medicines," he said. Grifo and colleagues at NYU abandoned a uterus transplant program "because some issues seemed insurmountable."

"The group of patients that would need this is so small we decided to focus our efforts elsewhere," he said. "We started in rats, but once we got to humans, it became very clear the rejection drug was going to be the issue, and we didn't know how to safely deal with that issue."

In Sweden, Olausson said anti-rejection drugs have not proved harmful to fetuses when the mother has undergone other organ transplants. Also, tests on mice, rats and pigs with transplanted wombs showed no ill effects from such drugs, he said.

Children evaluate educational games

Is it possible to create suitable and amusing educational computer games? Can you use qualities from other types of games? And what do the children really think of these kinds of games? Wolmet Barendregt from The University of Gothenburg, conducts research on children's game playing, how we can support learning with design and include the children in the design process.

And Wolmet Barendregt certainly involves the children very much in her research. During the Science Festival's school program in April this year, over a hundred preschool children attended a creative game workshop to evaluate the game Fingu. Fingu is a mathematical game for iPad where players use their fingers to get a feel for the numbers and thus a better understanding of them.

Working with children is both fun and challenging because you never know what will happen, says Wolmet. It is difficult to find suitable methods to use for children when evaluating. Children cannot verbalize, but they can draw. At the Science Festival, we tested a method of evaluation, Drawing Intervention, which some researchers advocate for children because they do not have to verbalize. Wolmet Barendregt however recognizes that it is problematic to know how much you influence yourself in what you say during the instructions and how much the different groups affect each other when they are in the same room. The children's past experiences, what other games they have played, certainly affects the outcome as well.

There were two main things that we learned about Fingu while testing this method. Curiosity and imagination could be improved, she explains.

Well, the kids think that some are funny, Wolmet answers. Many games are about solving tasks, and then the developers have added stuff around it so that it resembles a game. Sometimes the kids see through that.

Wolmet says that in Fingu focus is more on how children learn basic arithmetic using their fingers. She admits that there are some things to develop in order to create a really fun game and that the risk of so-called educational games in general is that they are either too educational and boring, or fun-filled but without any learning opportunities.

It's a fairly limited game and therefore may not encourage a lot of playing, but many children still play it several times. I have noticed that the interest in the game sometimes returns when the children realize that they have become better at certain things and therefore can reach higher levels, Wolmet says.

At a recent conference, "Interaction Design and Children", a conference focusing on children's needs and how to design for them, Wolmet Barendregt presented another study of Fingu and children playing the game where the analysis was of their development in the game. At the same conference Wolmet also presented a research project that studies how parents and children are playing so-called cooperative video games together where collaboration is necessary to get ahead in the game.

We have seen that game design affects the interaction between children and parents, especially when there is a difference in skills, something which is not uncommon. In some games, the player who is the best can help the other player who is not as good. In other cases, the player who is not so good restrains the more skilled player, and there are also games where both can explore things even if they are not euqally skilled, says Wolmet. We seek a deeper understanding of how different game design affects how you play together and what mechanisms can and cannot be used for educational games.

Sorting Out The Truth About Dieting From The Myths | Health ...

Losing weight can be a challenge, but with the right amount of will power and determination it can be done successfully. But exactly how do you sort out the truth from the welter of information which is available on dieting? For instance what about those how claim you should choose food that is low calorie but fills you up quickly, such as soups, salad or raw vegetables? Or those who argue you should fill up on low calorie drinks especially iced water?

One theory which has been the subject of much controversy in the past but which is gaining new momentum is that so called ?crash dieting? can help not only lose weight fast, but also help to keep it off long term. Previously, the perceived wisdom was that very low calorie diets such those espoused by Houston HCG Diet Clinics didn?t really work. Sure, the weight came off at the start, but you soon began to see it pile back on when you switched from the strict regime. However scientists in the UK have now produced evidence that very low calorie diets do in fact work and are effective both at helping achieve that initial weight loss AND in helping keep the weight off in the longer term

Rams rally in 2nd half, beat Redskins 31-28

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Robert Griffin III had his moments. The St. Louis Rams, though, have what counts most of all ? a win.

Sam Bradford threw for 310 yards and three touchdowns and Danny Amendola caught 15 passes for 160 yards as the Rams rallied for a 31-28 victory over RG3 and the Washington Redskins on Sunday in their home opener.

"The dome was rocking and it should be in a couple of weeks when we get back," Amendola said. "It was a good game, it came down to the wire, came down to the last kick."

Steven Jackson sat out most of the last three quarters after drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for spiking the ball, but coach Jeff Fisher said it was because Jackson had a groin strain and not because he'd lost his cool.

"It had nothing to do with the spike," Fisher said. "His groin was real tight and we just didn't want to subject him to it. I didn't think he'd be 100 percent."

Jackson said he thought he'd be able to re-enter the game but said the groin tightened on him.

Griffin led the Redskins (1-1) to a 21-6 lead, but the Rams came back thanks to the pass-catching of Amendola. The receiver tied an NFL record 12 first-half receptions, and caught a 1-yard TD pass to cut the lead to 21-13 at the half.

Amendola was out virtually all of last season after dislocating his left elbow making a cut in the opener.

"Obviously it's nice to have him back out there on the field," Bradford said. "He's a tremendous player. We knew going into this game that we were going to try to get him the ball."

Bradford had second-half scoring passes of 34 yards to Brandon Gibson and 1 yard to Matthew Mulligan.

Griffin ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third for Washington (1-1).

The Redskins got a final shot after DeAngelo Hall recovered running back Daryl Richardson's fumble at the Washington 37 with 2:40 to go. Josh Morgan was called for unsportsmanlike conduct for throwing the ball Rams cornerback Cortland Finnegan after a 7-yard catch on 3rd-and-8 to the Rams 29, leaving the Redskins with 4th-and-16.

Shanahan called for a 62-yard field goal attempt, and Billy Cundiff was wide right and well short with 1:13 to go.

"It might have been the first down, it was close enough, it was inches," Shanahan said. "You can't lose your poise. You lose your poise, obviously good things don't happen."

Shanahan thought Cundiff had a shot, reasoning "he kicks the ball out of the end zone" on kickoffs form the 35. Griffin was disappointed, but he understood.

"I thought we were going for it," Griffin said. "But in a dome, 62 (yards) is far, but it's not that far. I was on a knee and I hoped that it would go through."

The Rams took the lead on Bradford's TD pass to Mulligan on the first play of the fourth quarter, and Richardson ran it in on a 2-point conversion for a 24-21 lead. Mulligan had partially blocked Sav Rocca's punt to give the Rams the ball at the Washington 24 four plays earlier.

Griffin, who looked like a veteran in his NFL debut last week in leading the Redskins to a win over New Orleans, scored on runs of 5 and 7 yards. He also threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to Leonard Hankerson.

Jackson spiked the ball after getting ruled short of the goal line on a third-down carry from the 1. It came a play after the Rams successfully challenged a lost fumble call on Jackson.

After that, the franchise's career leading rusher left, and spent most of the rest of the game by himself on the sideline with his helmet in hand.

Amendola had a rough start, fumbling after a 13-yard catch on the Rams' first snap, with Josh Wilson returning it 30 yards for his fifth career defensive touchdown. He recovered nicely, matching the first-half NFL record set by the Colts' Reggie Wayne in 2007, while tying his career best game total in the process and setting a personal game-best with 133 yards receiving.

The Redskins lost defensive end Adam Carriker and outside linebacker Brian Orakpo to injuries early in the first quarter, while Rams offensive tackle Rodger Saffold was helped off with a right knee injury.

Orakpo and Saffold were hurt on the same play. Orakpo stripped Bradford and Saffold recovered the fumble and carried it 7 yards, but crumpled to the turf on the tackle.

NOTES: The game was chippy throughout with several skirmishes, especially in the first half with Redskins LB London Fletcher called for a personal foul on a sideline hit on Amendola and the Rams' Eugene Sims whistled for hitting Griffin, who appeared to be turning up the field and not running out of bounds. ... Amendola tied the franchise single-game record shared by Isaac Bruce and Flipper Anderson. ... Bradford passed for 300 or more yards for the fourth time in his career and threw for three TDs for the second time. ... Rams rookie punter Johnny Hekker averaged 54.3 yards on three attempts.
