Astronomers say they used a new statistical technique to find four possible super-Earths orbiting in the habitable zone of two stars within 22 light-years of Earth, Gliese 667C and tau Ceti.

Three of those candidate planets are among a tightly packed clutch of five that orbit Gliese 667C, part of a triple-star system 22 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius. The other possible planet is one of five orbiting tau Ceti, a sun-like star 12 light-years away in the constellation Cetus.
Taken together, the detections not only add to accumulating evidence that planets look to be more common than stars ? and that planets in habitable zones could be more common than previously thought, some of researchers reporting the finds say.
The finds also illustrate the power of improved statistical tools to boldly uncover candidate planets where no planet had been found before.
The evidence for these candidate planets requires independent confirmation, the researchers caution.?Still, the tools represent "a real breakthrough," says Steven Vogt, an astronomer at the University of California at Santa Cruz and a member of the team reporting the results for tau Ceti. The approach the team took leaves only about one chance in 3 million that the detections could herald something other than a planet.
Since the mid-1990s, astronomers have bagged more than 850 extra-solar planets. The ultimate goal is to find rocky planets with Earth-like masses orbiting within their stars' habitable zones ? a region where under the right conditions, liquid water can form stable pools on the surface. Liquid water is considered an essential ingredient for organic life.
Different groups of astronomers had aimed three telescopes for various lengths of time at tau Ceti and found nothing. Led by Mikko Tuomi at the University of Hertfordshire in Britain, the team reporting this latest analysis applied relatively new statistical tools to the combined data from these telescopes.
The result: "Five planets came out: boom, boom, boom, boom, boom ... as clear as a bell," Dr. Vogt says.
Tau Ceti has about 78 percent of our own sun's mass, but its composition is quite similar, Dr. Tuomi's team reports. Its candidate planets range from 2 to 6.6 times Earth's mass.
The innermost object orbits the star once every 14 days, while the outermost takes 642 days to make its circuit. The fourth planet from the star, with a 168-day orbit, travels well within a zone where liquid water could remain stable on the planet's surface, the team estimates. However, the results don't speak directly to what the planets are made of.?
A similar story has played out for Philip Gregory, an astronomer at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Previous researchers had found two planets orbiting Gliese 667C, a red dwarf with 31 percent of the sun's mass. Using a broadly similar statistical approach, he reports detecting the initial two, plus three more planets. Three of the five fall within the star's habitable zone, he estimates.

Last Summer I had the awesome pleasure of working with interior designer Sally Breer of Commingle Home, where we photographed her clients home in the Hollywood Hills. Alan Yang, a screenwriter for Parks & Recreation, has been enjoying this incredible home for just over a year now.
The home in the hills boasts two bedrooms, three bathrooms, an incredible office... and a speakeasy! Yes, Sally turned a former storage room into a speakeasy-inspired hidden bar, trap door included. Though Alan's home has a wonderful nod to many design traditions and a fun aesthetic, I love that he doesn't take it all too seriously.
In a rad house that has so many incredible elements like the awesome view, the cozy office with a fireplace and the newly remodeled kitchen, it'd be hard to name just one favorite element. Alan remarks, "I really like the porthole mirror in the living room. You can flip a switch on the side, make the mirror disappear and reveal a photograph. The photo is of my mom, my sister and me at my second birthday party. I told my designer to crop my mom and sister out and just leave me in the middle, looking really cute, but she refused. Now I'm glad she did, because it reminds me of how much I love my family."
This home has no shortage of nooks to crawl in and find a comfy cozy spot to take a nap. However that wasn't Alan's main goal at all. He hilariously admits, "I had one goal when designing and furnishing my new house: I wanted a place where I could comfortably sit and eat a burrito at four in the morning. I am proud to say that I have accomplished that goal, and eaten several burritos in the designated place."
Sally Breer was in charge of most of the home's design renovations and piecing together Alan's style in a way that worked for everyday living. Also with a home that truly implores the LA bachelor and lifestyle it's easy to imagine how much the city's influence may have had on the design itself. Alan says "L.A. has a unique mixture of electrifying, star-studded nightlife, breathtaking natural beauty, and quirky ethnic neighborhoods, and I think it's safe to say that soaking all of that in has made me the most important designer of the twenty-first century."

My Style: Modern, warm, comfortable. Also, everyone says "eclectic," so I'm going to say "not eclectic." It's the opposite of eclectic. Everything in my house comes from one aisle in the Target on Santa Monica and La Brea. Check it out -- it's an awesome aisle.
Inspiration: Southern California. The Park Hyatt Shanghai. The Bowery Hotel in New York. The art of Ed Ruscha. The smell of freshly cut Kentucky bluegrass. The sensation of petting a dolphin. Voicemails. Tangerines. Austrian harpischords. What was the question?
Favorite Element: There's a little bar downstairs that's hidden behind a bookshelf that serves as a secret door. I also plan to use that bar as a panic room, so now I'm screwed if my future robber reads Apartment Therapy.

What Friends Say: They're just blown away that I no longer live in a house with five dudes.
Biggest Embarrassment: I do not deserve to live in a house this nice.
Proudest DIY: The living room fireplace used to be covered in a weird beige marble that made visitors vomit in disgust. Now it has a beautiful reclaimed wood facade that makes visitors vomit in appreciation and awe.
Biggest Indulgence: There are beautiful vintage apothecary bottles from Paris above the bar in the speakeasy room. And with the previous sentence, I've just won the award for "Most Down-to-Earth Man in America."
Best Advice: Hire a designer with impeccable taste. Also, put secret rooms everywhere in your house. They're the best. I have like fourteen secret rooms that I didn't even let you guys photograph. I park my car in a cave in Glendale that connects to my house somehow, I don't even know how.
Dream Sources: As I said, everything in the house, including all my food and clothes and stuff, comes from that one aisle in Target. So I guess "that aisle in Target"?

Riverside County set a record in 2012. But it wasn?t something anyone was standing up and cheering about.
By the middle of November, the Sheriff?s Department had kicked out of jail more than 6,000 inmates who hadn?t finished serving sentences they had been given for their crimes.
That shattered a previous mark of 6,001 early releases set in 2007.
The county expected to finish 2012 sending about 7,000 prisoners home early for the year as a whole, said Chief Deputy Raymond Gregory, who oversees the correctional system.
?Everybody gets out eventually, except those who are in for capital crimes,? Gregory said in a telephone interview. ?Our whole justice system is built on a period of punishment and rehabilitation for people who are sentenced for their crimes. When we are not able to hold them for that period, some might argue that the system is thwarted. It kind of goes against everything that we try to uphold.?
At the same time, the law requires that inmates be provided access to a variety of services and be kept in uncrowded facilities.
Under a 1993 federal court order enforcing those rules, whenever county lockups reach capacity the sheriff has to let people out to make room for those being booked into jail.
Those ?fed kicks,? as officials refer to them, have been rare in some years and abundant in others.
During the housing boom and associated population explosion last decade, the county routinely released thousands of inmates early every year. Then late in the decade, releases slowed dramatically.
In 2010, just 76 got out early.
Officials credited the slowing economy and the opening of a 582-bed addition to the Banning jail for easing the strain.
But relief was short-lived. The trickle abruptly gave way to a flood, with the debut of realignment in late 2011.
Realignment is the controversial and profound change in California?s justice system that shifted much responsibility for prisoners from the state to counties. Scrambling to make room in state prisons to comply with a U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Sacramento forced county jails across the state to house nonviolent criminals who otherwise would have gone to prison.
Virtually overnight, the population in Riverside County jails swelled.
The county?s 3,906-bed, five-jail system went from 85 percent full on Oct. 1, 2011, the day realignment took effect, to completely full on New Year?s Day 2012. The sheriff began letting inmates out in droves and the pace remained steady throughout the year.
There was some related good news out of Sacramento in 2012: The state in March awarded Riverside County $100 million ?- matching the largest amount given anywhere in the state ?- for building jail beds.
The county plans to use the cash to defray half the cost of a 1,250-bed expansion of its Indio jail.
But that?s a long-term project. With a 2017 anticipated completion date, it?s not going to provide short-term relief. It won?t do anything for the crowding problem in the coming year.
So officials are focusing on other solutions, such as assigning qualified inmates to state fire camps and sending others home with electronic ankle bracelets that track them.
Look for those options to be pursued aggressively in 2013, Gregory said.
The county also is aiming to thin out the population by keeping offenders who are out on probation from committing more crimes and going back to jail.
?The sheriff needs jail beds. There?s no doubt about that,? said retiring Chief Probation Officer Alan Crogan. ?But we need more treatment capacity and day reporting services.?
Late in 2012, the Probation Department established a ?day reporting center? in Riverside. It is sort of a one-stop shop where probationers can go to for health services, social services and job training, as well as to earn a high school diploma.
The idea is to set people up for success as they transition back into society.
?If you?re going to change direction in these people?s behavior, you have to deal with the instances that created it,? Crogan said.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration on Monday approved a Johnson & Johnson tuberculosis drug that is the first new medicine to fight the deadly infection in more than four decades.
The agency approved J&J's pill, Sirturo, for use with older drugs to fight a hard-to-treat strain of tuberculosis that has not responded to other medications. However, the agency cautioned that the drug carries risks of potentially deadly heart problems and should be prescribed carefully by doctors.
Roughly one-third of the world's population is estimated to be infected with the bacteria causing tuberculosis. The disease is rare in the U.S., but kills about 1.4 million people a year worldwide. Of those, about 150,000 succumb to the increasingly common drug-resistant forms of the disease. About 60 percent of all cases are concentrated in China, India, Russia and Eastern Europe.
Sirturo, known chemically as bedaquiline, is the first medicine specifically designed for treating multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. That's a form of the disease that cannot be treated with at least two of the four primary antibiotics used for tuberculosis.
The standard drugs used to fight the disease were developed in the 1950s and 1960s.
"The antibiotics used to treat it have been around for at least 40 years and so the bacterium has become more and more resistant to what we have," said Chrispin Kambili, global medical affairs leader for J&J's Janssen division.
The drug carries a boxed warning indicating that it can interfere with the heart's electrical activity, potentially leading to fatal heart rhythms.
"Sirturo provides much-needed treatment for patients who have don't have other therapeutic options available," said Edward Cox, director of the FDA's antibacterial drugs office. "However, because the drug also carries some significant risks, doctors should make sure they use it appropriately and only in patients who don't have other treatment options."
Nine patients taking Sirturo died in company testing compared with two patients taking a placebo. Five of the deaths in the Sirturo group seemed to be related to tuberculosis, but no explanation was apparent for the remaining four.
Despite the deaths, the FDA approved the drug under its accelerated approval program, which allows the agency to clear innovative drugs based on promising preliminary results.
Last week, the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen criticized that approach, noting the drug's outstanding safety issues.
"The fact that bedaquiline is part of a new class of drug means that an increased level of scrutiny should be required for its approval," the group states. "But the FDA had not yet answered concerns related to unexplained increases in toxicity and death in patients getting the drug."
The FDA said it approved the drug based on two mid-stage studies enrolling 440 patients taking Sirturo. Both studies were designed to measure how long it takes patients to be free of tuberculosis.
Results from the first trial showed most patients taking Sirturo plus older drugs were cured after 83 days, compared with 125 days for those taking a placebo plus older drugs. The second study showed most Sirturo patients were cured after 57 days.
