$30 may seem ridiculous for a cellphone charger, and you might be tempted to buy an off-brand model. Ken Shirriff tests a dozen USB chargers and shows us why that may not be a good idea.
Ken?s tests were very detailed, going through twelve chargers from Apple, Samsung, HP, Monoprice, Belkin, and some unbranded counterfeits, measuring their power stability, quality, efficiency, and other stats.
The short version of his findings: Official chargers are the best, off-brand chargers from manufacturers like Belkin and KMS are okay, and knockoffs are a $2 safety hazard. If you?re looking to buy an official charger from Apple or Samsung, buy it directly from them to make sure you don?t get a knockoff. And, if you?re trying to save a few bucks by buying a third-party charger, just know that it?s a clear case of ?you get what you pay for? (though our favorite cheap cable retailer, Monoprice, seemed to be an exception to that rule).
We would have loved to see more off-brand chargers tested, but it gives a pretty clear look into what you get for your money. Hit the link to read more.
