PFT: Ex-Colt overcomes video-game addiction

Tim TebowAP

Bills fourth-round LB Nigel Bradham got some ?quality reps? with the first-team defense on Thursday and Friday.

Regarding Tim Tebow?s role as the Jets? new Wildcat quarterback, coach Rex Ryan recently told the media, ?As far as you guys know, we have not done anything.?? (Someone from the media said in response, ?Thanks, Belichick.?)

Undrafted TE Brad Herman ruptured an Achilles? tendon during warmups for Patriots practice on Thursday; he has since had surgery and he?s out for the year.

The professional sports teams in South Florida are trying to create the impression that they get along, after folks from the NHL?s Panthers handed out business cards and free tickets at a March anti-Dolphins rally.

Even though the Ravens? uniforms will now be plastered with a swoosh, their practice facility will be riddled for the next decade with the hybrid U and A.

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger continues to say that the team will be running the ball, a lot.

Brown LT Joe Thomas was at the Pentagon on Friday.? (He surely would have preferred to be at the White House.)

Bengals CB Adam Jones tapped into his Pacman past to help with a police-sponsored camp for underprivileged youth in the Cincinnati area.

While WR Justin Blackmon?s experience has served as a wakeup call for the rest of the Jaguars, coach Mike Mularkey said Friday of his message to do the right thing at all times:? ?I will still be shoving it down their throat.?? (And then he wondered whether anyone would quote him in a way that made his words seem like a double entendre.)

Texans S Danieal Manning drew rave reviews during the 2012 OTA sessions.

The Colts haven?t approached LB Dwight Freeney regarding a possible contract extension.

Eschewing the potential risks, Titans WR Kenny Britt has been spending extensive time running in a pool.

Raiders QB Terrelle Pryor is using his status as the final draft pick of Al Davis? life as motivation.

At least the photo of Broncos LB D.J. Williams? playbook included no extraneous body parts.

The Chiefs may add food trucks to the parking area at Arrowhead for pre-game tailgaiting.

A man dubbed the ?Frustrated Fan? bandit because he wore Chargers or Padres gear during a five-week spree of armed robberies was sentenced to 36 years and eight months in prison.? (At least he won?t miss either team winning a championship.)

The group of former Giants who attended the team?s Super Bowl trip to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue didn?t include WR Mario Manningham or RB Brandon Jacobs.

Cowboys LB Bruce Carter, a second-round pick in 2011 who tore an ACL in 2010, is becoming a ?real player,? in the estimation of defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.

Is Eagles QB Mike Kafka ready to be Mike Vick?s backup?

Redskins TE Niles Paul is getting plenty of support and encouragement as he makes the transition from receiver.

Vikings DT Kevin Williams, 31, thinks questions about his experience make him look old.

Bears LB Shea McClellin is still getting acclimated to Chicago and its surrounding cities, like Everton.

Packers CB Davon House, a rookie in 2011, is amazed that players like Cam Newton and Von Miller were able to make such an impact last year, given the limited prep time.

Raiders G.M. Reggie McKenzie says that Lions G.M. Martin Mayhew has made some really good decisions.

Panthers players are very happy offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski has yet to fulfill his dream of becoming an NFL head coach.

For Saints defensive backs Roman Harper and Malcolm Jenkins, the bounty scandal has possibly been a welcome distraction from their performance in the playoff loss to the 49ers.

The Falcons, after generating only 68 yards on screen passes in 2011, will have significantly more in 2012.

The Bucs will donate $11,000 to a pair of youth football teams that recently had their gear stolen.

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt says his players know how to avoid crossing the line in OTA sessions.

Earlier this year, the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission quietly offered to spend $48 million on stadium upgrades and to cut the lease from 2025 to 2020, if the Rams would waive the requirement that the Edward Jones Dome be a ?first-tier? venue by 2015.

A young Giants fan recently sent $3.36 to 49ers RB Brandon Jacobs to get him to return to New York.? (By October, several young 49ers fans could be offering Jacobs much more to do the same.)

The Seahawks are counting on two youths from Utah State.

(AP) ? Syrian activists have reported a surge of bloodshed in the central Hama province with at least 23 people killed ? and possibly many more.

The exact circumstances of the violence were impossible to independently confirm late Wednesday.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, the head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, says he has gathered the names of 23 people killed in shelling and other attacks. But the Local Coordination Committees, an activist group, says at least 78 were dead.

The violence in Syria has grown increasingly chaotic in recent months, and it is difficult to assign blame for much of the bloodshed as the country spirals toward civil war.

Math professor's driver's side mirror with a wider field of view receives a US patent

PHILADELPHIA (June 7, 2012) A side mirror that eliminates the dangerous "blind spot" for drivers has now received a U.S. patent. The subtly curved mirror, invented by Drexel University mathematics professor Dr. R. Andrew Hicks, dramatically increases the field of view with minimal distortion.

Traditional flat mirrors on the driver's side of a vehicle give drivers an accurate sense of the distance of cars behind them but have a very narrow field of view. As a result, there is a region of space behind the car, known as the blind spot, that drivers can't see via either the side or rear-view mirror. It's not hard to make a curved mirror that gives a wider field of view no blind spot but at the cost of visual distortion and making objects appear smaller and farther away.

Hicks's driver's side mirror has a field of view of about 45 degrees, compared to 15 to 17 degrees of view in a flat driver's side mirror. Unlike in simple curved mirrors that can squash the perceived shape of objects and make straight lines appear curved, in Hicks's mirror the visual distortions of shapes and straight lines are barely detectable.

Hicks, a professor in Drexel's College of Arts and Sciences, designed his mirror using a mathematical algorithm that precisely controls the angle of light bouncing off of the curving mirror.

"Imagine that the mirror's surface is made of many smaller mirrors turned to different angles, like a disco ball," Hicks said. "The algorithm is a set of calculations to manipulate the direction of each face of the metaphorical disco ball so that each ray of light bouncing off the mirror shows the driver a wide, but not-too-distorted, picture of the scene behind him."

Hicks noted that, in reality, the mirror does not look like a disco ball up close. There are tens of thousands of such calculations to produce a mirror that has a smooth, nonuniform curve.

Hicks first described the method used to develop this mirror in Optics Letters in 2008 (http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/OL.33.001672).

In the United States, regulations dictate that cars coming off of the assembly line must have a flat mirror on the driver's side. Curved mirrors are allowed for cars' passenger-side mirrors only if they include the phrase "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear."

Because of these regulations, Hicks's mirrors will not be installed on new cars sold in the U.S. any time soon. The mirror may be manufactured and sold as an aftermarket product that drivers and mechanics can install on cars after purchase. Some countries in Europe and Asia do allow slightly curved mirrors on new cars. Hicks has received interest from investors and manufacturers who may pursue opportunities to license and produce the mirror.

###

The U.S. patent, "Wide angle substantially non-distorting mirror" (United States Patent 8180606) was awarded to Drexel University on May 15, 2012.

Child CT scans can raise brain cancer risk

Children who get several CT scans have a slightly higher chance of brain cancer and leukemia in later life, though the risk is still small and probably outweighed by the need to get the test, researchers reported.

  1. Don't miss these Health stories

    1. Eye burns linked to Clear Care cleaner

Amid ongoing reports of burning eyes and emergency injuries, the makers of a popular contact lens solution have failed to adequately warn consumers about the dangers of using the product improperly, a patient safety group says.

    2. 'Macho' dudes are more likely to sacrifice for the team
    3. Does the sun make you sneeze? It's not just you
    4. Men seek testosterone quick fix, with risks
    5. Most breast-feeding moms quit earlier than planned

The study also found that a child exposed to the cumulative radiation of between five and 10 CT scans is three times more likely than an unexposed child to develop leukemia.

The use of CT scans has risen rapidly since they were introduced 30 years ago. For children, they're used to evaluate head, neck or spine injuries or neurological disorders.

While the absolute risk of cancers developing after a CT scan is still small, the researchers said radiation doses should be kept as low as possible and alternatives to ionizing radiation should be used whenever possible.

"It's well known that radiation can cause cancer but there is an ongoing scientific debate about whether relatively low doses of radiation, like those received from CT scans, do increase cancer risks, and if so the magnitude of those risks," said Amy Berrington de Gonzalez of the National Cancer Institute at the United States National Institutes of Health, who worked on the study with scientists from Britain and Canada.

"Ours is the first study to provide direct evidence of a link...and we were also able to quantify that risk."

CT imaging is a diagnostic technique often used on children with possible head injuries.

The number of CT scans has increased rapidly in the United States and other wealthy countries, particularly in the past decade, because new uses are constantly being identified, such as scanning for possible appendicitis.

The risk of developing cancer comes from the ionizing radiation used in CT scans. The risk is higher in children, who are more radiosensitive than adults.

"This work emphasizes the very great importance of only using this form of imaging when it has a strong medical justification," Bruce Armstrong, professor of public health at Sydney University, said in an emailed comment on the study.

No radiation in ultrasound
One alternative to a CT scan is ultrasound, which involves no radiation, but is less accurate. A study published last month found that it may also be safe to postpone CT scans in some cases of childhood head injuries.

In the current study, published in the Lancet medical journal, researchers studied almost 180,000 patients who had a CT scan between 1985 and 2002 in a British hospital.

They extracted the number and types of CT scan from the records and estimated the radiation dose absorbed by the brain and bone marrow in milli-Grays (mGy) from each scan. These data were then linked to data on cancer cases and deaths in the UK National Health Service Registry between 1985 and 2008.

A total of 74 out of 178,604 patients were diagnosed with leukemia and 135 of 176,587 were diagnosed with brain cancer, and the researchers calculated the relative risk of leukemia increased by 0.036 for every mGy received, while the increased risk of a brain tumor was 0.023.

Mark Pearce of Newcastle University, who led the study, said scientists should make it a priority to work on further refining CT technology so that radiation doses are reduced as much as possible.

"Alternative diagnostic procedures that do not involve ionizing radiation exposure, such as ultrasound and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) might be appropriate in some clinical settings," he added.

David Spiegelhalter, an expert in the understanding of risk at Cambridge University, who was not directly involved in the research, said its results needed to be seen in context.

"This study suggests there is around a 1 in 10,000 chance that a young person's CT scan will give them leukemia over the next 10 years," he said in an emailed comment. "This is important, but the CT scan may be even more important - a judgment has to be made."
