SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) ? When Adam Sandler's bad, he's really bad, according to voters for the Razzies, an Academy Awards spoof that singles out the worst movies of the year.
Sandler received a record 11 nominations Saturday for the Razzies as star, producer or writer on three 2011 movies ? "Jack and Jill," ''Just Go with It" and "Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star."
That more than doubled the previous record of five Razzie nominations held by Eddie Murphy for 2007's "Norbit."
Sandler's nominations include worst actor for both "Jack and Jill" and "Just Go with It" ? and worst actress for "Jack and Jill," in which he plays a family man and his own twin sister.
Sandler also had two nominations as worst screen couple opposite Jennifer Aniston or Brooklyn Decker in "Just Go with It" and opposite Katie Holmes, Al Pacino or himself in "Jack and Jill."
As a producer, Sandler was credited with worst-picture and worst prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel nominations for both "Bucky Larson" and "Jack and Jill." He also shared in worst-screenplay nominations as a writer on both movies, and a worst-ensemble nomination for "Jack and Jill."
"It's almost karmic for someone to have made that much razz-able stuff in one year," said Razzies founder John Wilson. "He has angered someone really powerful, I would say."
Along with "Bucky Larson" and "Jack and Jill," worst-picture contenders are "New Year's Eve," ''Transformers: Dark of the Moon" and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part 1."
"Jack and Jill" led with 12 nominations, with "Transformers" second with nine and "Breaking Dawn" right behind with eight.
Razzie nominations were released on the eve of the Oscars. Winners will be announced on April Fool's Day.
For worst actor, Sandler is up against "Bucky Larson" star Nick Swardson, along with Russell Brand for "Arthur"; Nicolas Cage for "Drive Angry," ''Season of the Witch" and "Trespass"; and Taylor Lautner for "Abduction" and "Breaking Dawn."
Swardson also was nominated for worst supporting actor for "Jack and Jill" and "Just Go with It."
For worst actress, Sandler is joined by another cross-dressing actor, Martin Lawrence in "Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son." Also nominated were Sarah Palin for her documentary "The Undefeated"; Sarah Jessica Parker for "I Don't Know How She Does It" and "New Year's Eve"; and Kristen Stewart for "Breaking Dawn."
Several Oscar winners made the Razzies list, among them Cage (a best-actor winner for "Leaving Las Vegas") and Pacino (a best-actor winner for "Scent of a Woman"), who was nominated for worst supporting actor for "Jack and Jill."

Patients with heart disease who took cholesterol-lowering statins were significantly less likely to develop depression than those who did not, in a study by Mary Whooley, MD, a physician at the San Francisco VA Medical Center and a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.
The study was published electronically in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry (February 21, 2012).
Whooley and her research team evaluated 965 heart disease patients for depression, and found that the patients who were on statins were significantly less likely to be clinically depressed than those who were not. They then followed the 776 patients who were not depressed 520 who were using statins and 256 who were not for an additional six years. Of those taking statins, 18.5 percent developed depression, compared with 28 percent of those not on the drugs. Put another way, the patients who took statins were 38 percent less likely to develop depression than patients who did not.
As the study went on, said Whooley, the difference between the two groups became more pronounced, with the patients on statins becoming less likely to develop depression and the patients not on statins becoming more likely to become depressed over time.
"This would suggest that statins may have some kind of long-term protective effect against depression, perhaps by helping to prevent atherosclerosis in the brain, which can contribute to depressive symptoms," Whooley said.
She also noted that statins have positive effects on the endothelium the inner lining of the blood vessels keeping blood vessels less rigid and therefore better able to adapt to the body's changing needs. "The exact mechanism is not known, however, and requires further study," she said.
Whooley cautioned that it is possible that patients who take statins "are just healthier overall than those who don't, and somehow we're not accounting for that in our analysis, even though we adjusted for factors such as smoking, physical activity and cholesterol levels."
If statins are definitively proven to protect against depression, said Whooley, they could be used to reduce the burden of depressive symptoms in patients with heart disease and, by extension, improve cardiovascular outcomes in depressed patients. Whooley has shown in previous studies that heart disease patients with depression are less likely to exercise and take medication, thus increasing their risk for heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular events.
Statins are the most commonly-prescribed medication in the world, according to the study authors. "They are relatively safe, and generally well-tolerated," said Whooley.

Abstract
PURPOSE:
We established a screening program for prior asbestos workers using low-dose computed tomography (LDCT).
METHODS:
Between March 2005 and October 2007 we performed LDCT (50-60 mA, 120 kV, 1.25 mm) in 516 asbestos-exposed individuals. Parenchymal nodules were followed according to lung cancer screening recommendations, morphology and location of pleural plaques was noted in detail.
RESULTS:
We included 507 men and 9 women (median 60.0 years), 395 (76.6%) were smokers. Annual repeat has been performed in 356 participants. We found plaques in 357 subjects (69.2%), commonly calcified (79.6%), flat (86.6%), and symmetric (86.8%), and mostly involving the costal (96.4%) and diaphragmatic (81.8%) pleura. Uncommon plaques were lobulated (13.2%), right-dominant asymmetric (4.5%), or with effusions (0.1%).We found pulmonary nodules in 371 subjects (71.9%), 91 (17.6%) had at least one nodule > or =5 mm; 10 growing nodules were found on annual repeat LDCT. In 41 individuals, plaques were regarded as atypical; three had new pleural/peritoneal abnormalities on annual repeat LDCT. An interim limited computed tomography of the observed abnormality prompted 10 diagnostic biopsies, resulting in a diagnosis of six lung cancers, two pleural mesothelioma and two peritoneal mesothelioma; overall rate of screen-detected malignancies is 2.1%. There were four interval cancers, diagnosed after baseline (n = 1) or after the annual repeat (n = 3): two pleural and one peritoneal mesothelioma, and one mixed squamous/small cell carcinoma.
CONCLUSION:

Jeremy Lin is Asian -- a Taiwanese-American from Palo Alto, California who went to Harvard -- and after a turnover-laden game that marked his first loss as a Knicks starter, ESPN.com splashed the words "A Chink in the Armor" underneath a photo of him mishandling the basketball. The Internet -- the same Internet that has turned a God-loving novice into a search term that out-Googles Jesus -- is outraged. And, of course, the headline was egregious, offensive and downright racist. But to act as if this gross mistake wasn't coming, to fake shock that anyone could even think of his race, is nearly as bad an offense.
As a sports-crazed kid growing up around New York City in the early part of the previous decade, I had posters and carefully-scissored Post and Daily News back pages chronicling the brief and glorious run of the 2000 National League Champion Mets lining my bedroom walls. I had Mike Piazza, the super star, Edgardo Alfonzo, the quiet rock, and Robin Ventura, the charismatic face of the team, staring at me from all directions, as if to say, we couldn't have done it without you, Jordan.
My real sports idols, however, were Gary Cohen and Howie Rose, the play-by-play broadcasters who wove those tales of hardball glory over WFAN, the radio station I'd listen to with the TV on mute and was the number one pre-set on all the various radios that I kept stashed under my pillow for all those extra-inning games on school nights. As a scrawny Jewish kid, I knew from an early age that my best chance to make it in pro sports wasn't on the field, but in the media (and I was already blogging, before that was a word).
Sure, I was a decent Little League player, with a few game-winning hits and a weird love for taking grounders, but I knew that the seemingly ironically titled Jewish Sports Heroes book that my grandfather once bought me during a stretch of illness wasn't something that required frequent reprint for new chapters dedicated to the new heroes. My dad took me to the batting cages far more than my average bat speed and slap-single power warranted, but there was no pretense that hard work and some help from those Fred McGriff-approved Tom Emanski training videos would put me on a path to actually being paid to play baseball. Those over-priced, green-bronze cage tokens were an investment in keeping me busy and bolstering a warped teenage self-confidence, not a down payment that would return the gold and treasure given out liberally to first round draft picks.
So, when a skinny kid began hitting homeruns miles out of Toronto's Skydome, and then cashed in with a massive contract in the Hollywood spotlight of Dodger Stadium, I was surprised, elated and proud to call myself a Shawn Green fan. Sure, he didn't play for my Mets, but he was a member of the other underdog team I was born into: the Jews, traditionally an even more hapless group of athletes. Now, I wasn't at all religious then and I still only know when the high holidays are here when I see my little brother tweet about a day off from school in late September, but damnit, I could reasonably imagine that this guy, unlike seemingly every other ballplayer, was just like me: he probably had zany relatives, was constantly called by a nervous-but-loving mom, spent half his childhood learning about the Holocaust and felt weirdly proprietary over bagels, especially when all the kids who got to celebrate Christmas were eating them before homeroom.
Green was one of the National League's best sluggers for a few years, and he'd have been a star no matter what. But naturally, because he was different, the media gave him special attention. Whether he liked it or not, he was the face of Jewish athletics, this generation's Sandy Koufax, who, over 30 years after his retirement, was still the gold standard for big league Yids. No doubt, he was covered as someone, something, different.
After a while, it began to grate on me: why couldn't we just appreciate his talent, and let him be a regular ballplayer, who gets interviewed and highlighted after a game winning RBI, with puns made on anything but the different religious symbol he wore on a silver chain underneath his jersey -- especially when huge, silver and diamond crosses were known to thump the chests of half of the league's players when they ran around the bases?
And when he came to the Mets, during their momentous (and then soul-crushing) 2006 run to the NLCS, forget it; I was interning for the team that summer, and one of my sharpest memories amidst all the winning and celebrating was the attention paid to the diminished right fielder who became the toast of the most Jewish part of the country.
I felt that, instead of being a star who happened to be Jewish, Green was famous for being the Jewish star. And the same thing is happening to Jeremy Lin, but a million times worse.
Lin, as I said, can ball. No doubt. And when boxer Floyd Mayweather said that Lin is only getting hyped because he's Asian, he rightly got smacked by the media and fans on Twitter. But the fact is that, Mayweather, probably quite accidentally, raised a valid point. Lin, with his monster numbers, buzzer-beating heroics and winning ways, not to mention feel-good, anyone-can-do-it populist story, would be celebrated regardless of his race, especially in a town that, quite literally, gives its sports heroes keys to the city. But it's hard for me to not think that Lin is also being viewed by some as a novelty act, a high-flying world-beater who, in street clothes, might be mistaken for a math major.
It's a quiet racism when compared to the injustices our country has legally and tacitly sanctioned, but Asian-Americans do indeed face their own uphill struggle against stereotypes and prejudice. And so Lin, in breaking all those stereotypes, is being giddily greeted as some sort of "Amasian" ninja (he's been called the Linja), his seemingly inexplicable success amplified by the fact that he looks different from anyone else on the court -- or, for the most part, any court throughout the nation.
I'm a Knicks fan and have enjoyed this run as much as anyone, especially after all the years I've suffered with this team. I've even made my fair share of Lin puns, which, in isolation, aren't particularly egregious. And I have had plenty of conversations with fellow liberal New Yorkers who wouldn't dream of making a racial slur but can't help but get excited over the bizarre and thrilling adventure on which this kid has led the Knicks.
We'd love him regardless of his race, because he's damn talented and a winner, but we should at least admit that the goofiness, the puns, the sudden inclusion on the national stage of All-Star weekend and the dedicated merchandise booth at Madison Square Garden -- all that is undoubtedly linked, in part, to his race. And it's okay to celebrate it -- every kid, regardless of race or religion, deserves a sports role model -- but don't act surprised when it suddenly goes awry, like it did with ESPN's headline. Yes, the writer has since been fired, but that doesn't mean the rest of us don't have some important lessons to learn as well.

We're continuing our discussion today about how to make a beachhead in your luxury market, especially when there's a strong player that you're trying to compete with.
We've talked about all the things that are necessary to break in to the luxury market like understating the characteristics of the four categories of wealthy people and the five areas of expertise you need to succeed. Now it?s time to actually get in front of a luxury seller. We want to make the beachhead that will lead to our first listing.
Today?s message is to find the ?maverick? in your market. Every luxury real estate market has at least one. A Maverick is that wealthy person who goes against the grain.
For example, I was recently at a house where they spent three-quarters of a million dollars ? maybe even a million dollars ? just on the garage. This garage was to die for. It had radiant heated tile floors and hand-hewn, naturally-finished wood beams. The light fixtures hanging from the ceiling were bronze with halogen bulbs. You walk through the garage and workshop area and you arrive to the car parking area. There in the middle of this huge garage, with a fresh waxed metallic green shine you can see yourself in is a Subaru Forester. That's right, a Subaru Forester.
This may be an extreme example, but the owner of this property and car qualifies as a maverick. Mavericks don't like to do things the way everyone else. They like to be a little bit different. That means they are less likely to work with the number one market leader, the person really known for the high-end of that marketplace. This is the person that you can make a beachhead with. Let?s talk about how to do that.
? Direct mail. Both directly to them and their gatekeepers.
? Remember, you are an expert on price and value. Even mavericks have gatekeepers and don?t like overpaying for taxes. If you were to market to the gatekeeper your ability to provide up to the minute market information, that is your in-road. If anyone's going to take a chance on a new person breaking into the market, it is the maverick.
Another question I hear over and over again is: ?When I show up on a listing appointment they're going to ask me how many listings have you sold in the high-end?? The way I would advise you to answer that question, if you don?t have a track record yet, is to say: ?I work in the high-end on a limited edition basis. I only take one seller or two sellers ? (pick the number that works for you) ? at a time because I want to devote all my personal attention and energy to that property. I want to make sure I can oversee every aspect of the marketing myself. I want to make sure I can be present for every single showing of that property. I want to make sure I'm elbow to elbow with the photographer when they shoot every aspect of this property so that everything is perfect. I want to make sure I'm looking over the shoulder of the marketing person who puts the brochure together. That?s why, Mr. and Mrs. Seller, I only take one at a time, very limited edition. Wouldn't you like to have somebody working like that on your property??
This is one way make the beachhead. It works; I know it does because it worked for me many years ago.

According to the report, Oceanside City Council enacted vacancy decontrol in May, but a referendum signed by more than 15,000 Oceanside residents blocked the move. Political Action Committees are in place supporting opposite sides of the issue including Taxpayers & Property Owners for Fairness (Sponsored by Western Manufactured Housing Communities Association PAC for Rental Fairness) on the side of vacancy decontrol and Taxpayers for Oceanside Neighborhoods, which opposes decontrol.
